April 25, 2009

Time for another journey, this time it is Nicaragua.  Corn Island, Nicaragua to be exact, an Island just off the East Coast on the Caribbean Sea.  When I posted "Headed to Nicaragua" on Facebook, my friend commented "There is something you don't hear every day."

I guess I like to go off the beaten path where you can get a taste of what the place is really like.  How did I choose Nicaragua?  My travel companion from NYC and I were talking earlier in the year about possible destinations both of us were concerned about the economy and how much we should be spending on travel.  We decided to not plan anything.

That changed I read the March 2009 issue of "Travel and Leisure" which featured Nicaragua.  I am not sure why I get the magazine and I rarely pay close attention to their articles because the cater to the high end traveler who are willing to spend $500 per night on a hotel.  Although I love a good hotel and a great meal at a top restaurant, I don't pick my destinations according to the hotel and restaurants but rather what there is to do and see.

At any rate, the article on Nicaragua struck a cord with me.  The author referred to as the next Costa Rica.  I like being on the forefront of finding new destinations as opposed to the mainstream.  And the trip looked like it could be very economical the hotel on Corn Island at the end of the article was listed at $29.00 a night.

After looking into airfares, Allan and I agreed a week on an Island reading, relaxing, taking pictures, snorkeling, eating and drinking sounded very nice.  No early tour buses to catch,  no predefined schedule of what were going to see eat and sleep. Best of all, there wouldn't be a huge time change to adjust to.

So off to Corn Island - home to Captain Morgan for many years.  Don't expect a huge website with lots of detail, I am not here for the history but rather the fun in the sun.
